DIVYA, which means radiance in Sanskrit, was born in 1987. It was conceived as a cooking pot of World Music with the spice of Indian improvisational art forms. The goal was to build a meaningful bridge between different musical cultures.
The group was selected as one of the ten finalists for the 9th Belgian International Jazz Contest and won an award there. After this DIVYA toured the world extensively performing at international festivals. While in Budapest, DIVYA recorded its album entitled In a Manner of Speaking for the Hungarian label Hungaraton. DIVYA performed at the Thailand Jazz Festival,1996 held in honour of the King's 50th year ascension to the throne. There were 40 bands at 10 venues and DIVYA was heralded as the freshest sound in Jazz. In October 1997, DIVYA participated in a two day international culture festival hosted by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Min On Concert Agency of Japan.
Niranjan Jhaveri introduced the members of Planet Blow, a Cologne based Euro jazz band, to Sandhya. The two collaborated in a very successful project. They played 2 concerts in Bombay and 1 in Pune. In summer 1998, they did a 10 city tour of Germany, playing at jazz clubs and festivals, which was followed by another tour in 1999.
In July 2000, Roger Hanschel of Planet Blow, who is also a member of the Kölner Saxophone Mafia, started a band called Roger Hanschel's Leela where Sandhya Sanjana was
featured on vocals.
The repertoire included compositions with an Indian melodic/rhythmic influence.
Leela toured Germany in July and December 2000 and performed twice at the EXPO 2000 in Hannover, Germany.
Sandhya has performed with DJ Eagle-I at the Asian underground club night Sutra Funk.
Ahimsa brought together Indian/western classical music and jazz with spoken word. Sandhya - vocals, Marion von Tilzer - piano and Heiko Dijker - tabla and percussion.
In Lakshmi she did an acoustic/electronic collaboration with drummer/ percussionist Jörn Schipper from Planet Blow.
Rohit Karan Batra (USA) shot a film called Yogita. He requested Sandhya to sing on one of the specially composed pieces for the film.
Sandhya has recorded Bhakti - an album of devotional/meditational music with her friend Harida for Nazca Music. Music & more... ->> .
She has recorded an album of spiritual music by Felix Woschek, a Portugal based musician and producer. This project features one of India's greatest sarangi players, Sultan Khan. The ethereal singing of Alice Coltrane and her disciples is one of the highlights of the album.
Sandhya recently visited the United States. In New York she met up with one of her mp3.com friends, Satish of IndoFunk. She did some gigs with the band in NYC and recorded some material with them too. The album Basement Sessions is available at their website. They plan to perform together more in future.
Sandhya co-composed and recorded a CD for Keda Records. Entitled Ramayana - a journey, it was part of a Channel 4 television mini series of the same name. The CD is available on Keda Records.
In 2006, Sandhya co-composed and recorded several tracks with The Angel Brothers, a Doncaster based band. She performed with them extensively in the U.K. and also at the Folk Music Festival in Vancouver.
Matwala was a Rotterdam based jazz/lounge act with Indian influences. Sandhya has been featured here along with Heiko Dijker on tabla and Siddharth on sitar. They were chosen by Pop-Unie to appear on their yearly CD compilation of promoted bands.
